In the present context, it becomes necessary to prepare the students of the different levels of higher education to face the challenges that the new global forms of communication represent, from the academic to the social, cultural and economic aspects. In the academic world, readers and researchers must interact in linguistic contexts different from their own language. The effectiveness of this interaction will mostly depend on their linguistic competence to understand what is expressed in a second language.

Target population

This course is mainly intended for students of the different programs of the National University of Colombia, and to the general public, interested in acquiring reading comprehension skills in English.

To provide the students with tools for the development of organizational (grammatical and textual) knowledge, and pragmatic (functional and socio-linguistic) knowledge, which allow to strengthen understanding and production of expository, descriptive, narrative and argumentative texts, by means of different reading and writing techniques.

To provide spaces of critical reflection and comparison of the different representations of cultures and languages.

The planned activities are aimed at familiarizing the students with the different types of texts in English, providing them with strategies to understand information, and exposing them to the most commonly used academic text forms. Thus, thanks to the Reading Comprehension course, participants will develop abilities necessary to:

• Demonstrate their understanding of simple and complex texts in English.
• Identify the linguistic relationships of texts to solve personal and academic requirements.
• Use new ways of accessing knowledge by means of the comprehension of English texts.
• Establish logical relationships between ideas, concepts, notions and knowledge expressed in English.
• Improve their vocabulary in English.
• Use the essential strategies to understand a text written in English.
• Use virtual tools for reading comprehension in English.
• Efficiently solve reading comprehension tests in English.
